If your gutters overflow when they’re clean, the blockage is rarely the problem and the usual causes are capacity, fall, alignment or an obstruction further down the system. The most common culprits are a downpipe or underground drain that is blocked below the visible gutter run, a gutter that has sagged or been fitted with the fall running the wrong way, brackets spaced too far apart, or a gutter that is simply too small for the area of roof discharging into it. On steeper roofs, water can also gain enough speed to shoot straight over the front edge of the gutter during heavy rain without ever touching the back of it.
There is also a category of fault that looks like overflow but is not. Water running down the wall behind the gutter, dripping from the back edge, or spilling from a failed joint is a different problem with a different fix, and it gets misdiagnosed constantly. Working out which of these you actually have is the difference between a twenty minute adjustment and paying for a full replacement you did not need. Below is how to identify each cause and what putting it right involves.
The blockage is below where you can see
This catches people out more than anything else. Homeowners clear the gutter run, see it is spotless, and assume drainage is fine. In fact the debris that came out of the gutter over previous years has washed into the downpipe, the shoe at the bottom, or the gulley and underground drain it feeds into. The gutter then fills faster than it can empty and spills over.
The test is simple. Run a hose into the gutter at the far end from the outlet and watch the bottom of the downpipe. If water is not coming out at roughly the rate it is going in, or if the gulley at the base backs up and pools, your obstruction is below the gutter. Gulleys silt up with leaves and grit over the years and are easy to forget about entirely.
The fall is wrong or the gutter has sagged
A gutter needs a consistent fall towards the outlet. Get that wrong and water sits in the low spots rather than draining, then spills over the front the moment rainfall exceeds what the standing section can hold.
Two things cause it. Either it was fitted with insufficient fall or with the fall running away from the outlet, which happens more often than you would think on DIY and rushed installations. Or the gutter has sagged over time because the brackets have loosened, corroded or pulled out of soft timber. Sagging is also a warning sign in its own right, because brackets pull out when the fascia behind them has gone soft with rot. If the fascia is failing, fixing the gutter alone is temporary, and the soffits and fascias need attention at the same time.
Look along the gutter line from the ground on a dry day. A visible dip, a section sitting lower than its neighbours or a gutter that is no longer parallel with the roof edge all point to this.
Brackets spaced too far apart
Related but distinct. Gutter brackets need to be at close enough centres to stop the run flexing under load, generally around a metre and closer either side of joints and outlets. Full of water, a gutter is much heavier than it looks, and under-bracketed runs bow in the middle every time it rains hard. The gutter looks straight when dry and dips visibly when full, so this one is best diagnosed during rainfall rather than after it.
The gutter is too small for the roof
Capacity is a genuinely common cause and rarely considered. The volume of water arriving in a gutter depends on the area of roof draining into it, the pitch of that roof and the intensity of the rainfall. A gutter that coped perfectly well for thirty years can start overflowing after an extension is added, after a roof is re-covered, or simply because rainfall is arriving in heavier bursts than it used to. The Met Office has recorded a trend towards more intense downpours in the UK, and a system sized for gentle steady rain will overflow in a cloudburst regardless of how clean it is.
Older properties are particularly prone to this, since original cast iron half round gutters were sized to the standards of their day and often serve large steep roof slopes. It is one of the recurring issues we see on older and period homes where everything else about the roof is sound.
In our experience, upgrading to a deeper high capacity gutter profile works better than replacing like for like with standard half round on large or steep roof slopes, because the deeper profile carries substantially more water for the same visual footprint and removes the overflow at source, whereas a like for like replacement gives you a brand new gutter that overflows in exactly the same downpour as the old one. On a small sheltered roof, standard profile is perfectly adequate and cheaper. On a big steep slope or a valley discharge point, it is worth the upgrade.
Water overshooting the gutter entirely
On steep roofs, water can be travelling fast enough by the time it reaches the eaves to launch straight over the outer lip of the gutter. You will spot this because the overflow only happens in heavy rain, the gutter is not full when it does, and the water lands well out from the wall.
The usual causes are a gutter set too low relative to the tile line, a gutter positioned too far out from the roof edge, or missing tile overhang. Adjusting the bracket height or fitting a drip edge normally solves it without replacing anything.
Water getting in behind the gutter
This one is often mistaken for overflow and is more serious. If the roofing underlay at the eaves has decayed, torn or receded, water running off the tiles can drop behind the gutter rather than into it, then run down the fascia and the wall. The gutter stays half empty while the wall gets soaked, which is the giveaway.
The fix is at the roof edge rather than the gutter, usually replacing the eaves protection so water is directed back into the gutter where it belongs. It sits in the same family as other roof repair work at the eaves, and it is worth catching early because persistent water against a fascia rots it quickly.
Failed joints, leaks and moss residue
Plastic gutter joints rely on rubber seals that harden and shrink with UV and age, so a fifteen year old system can leak at every union without a single blockage. Cast iron rusts through at the base of the run and at joints. Neither is overflow strictly speaking, but both present as water where it should not be.
Finally, even a clean gutter can be fed constantly by a mossy roof. Every rainfall washes grit and fragments down, so the gutter you cleared in spring is partially silted again by autumn. Dealing with moss on the roof itself is what actually stops the cycle, rather than clearing the gutter more often.
Getting it diagnosed properly
Overflowing gutters are worth taking seriously because the damage is to the building rather than the gutter. Water running down a wall causes penetrating damp, rots fascias and soffits, saturates the ground at the base of the wall and, over time, affects the wall structure itself.
