The parts of a roof, and where they fail
Most people ring a roofer knowing something is wrong and not what it is called. These are the parts the water actually gets in through, what each one does, and why it goes.
- RidgeThe capping tiles along the very top. Their mortar is the most exposed on the roof and usually the first to go.
- Chimney flashingThe lead where the chimney comes through the tiles. More leaks start here than anywhere else on a roof.
- Tiles and slatesThe part you can see, and the part that matters least when a roof leaks. What keeps the water out is underneath.
- VergeThe edge where the tiles stop at a gable end. Wind gets under it and lifts.
- Eaves, fascias and soffitsThe boards and guttering along the bottom edge. They take the water away from the wall rather than down it.
